When I turned 40 I realized I wasn’t likely going to have children. This came as a surprise to me. I love kids and I wasn’t sure if I would be “all right” if I didn’t have some of my own. Most people tried to assure me I could still have them, or I could always adopt. Very, very few responded by letting me know I would likely be “okay” either way. Yet a little voice inside was saying to me: “why be beholden to 1 (or 2) when you can be available to many! There is already enough here to love.” So, I started intentionally talking about this topic with other women. At first these conversations were one on one, but soon my conversations evolved into organized circles of women all around the country. From Louisville to LA, Seattle to Cape Cod, I asked the group 5 questions and mostly listened to a range of responses, emotions, and thoughts. I began recording these conversations with permission, and eventually crafted a 15 minute audio program out of them.
Enough to love is a narrative, weaving together these stories and voices of women who, by choice or chance, did not have children, and what they are doing instead with their lives and love, in a world that needs more love.
